WPAFB was
one of the first military
installations
in the country to implement a 400 MHz Trunked Radio System (TRS). It
started
out as just a 5 frequency system but it greatly expanded in mid 1995
during
the 1995 Dayton Balkan Peace Accords. It has since scaled back to it's
current configuration. It is a Motorola Type II UHF system. Currently
this system can be tracked using the Trunker software, and most
trunktracking scanners.
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB TRUNKED RADIO SYSTEM
This is a P-16 system as it still running at 3600 baud in analog mode, but using digital voice.
You will now need a digital scanner to listen to the system.

There are two Military Operation Areas or MOA in Indiana. The Hilltop/12 Mile MOA is located in extreme northwestern Indiana and used by units from Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. The Red Hills MOA is located in southwestern Indiana with a portion of it also located in southeastern Illinois. |

| There is a good deal of aerial (or mid-air) refueling taking place within and near Ohio. The northern two-thirds of Ohio feature 4 refueling tracks. Cleveland Center controls AR 217, 218, 219 and 220. The main Air Refueling wing operating here is the 171st ARW based at Pittsburgh IAP. Aerial Refueling also takes place in the Buckeye and Brush Creek MOAs. Two aerial refueling tracks have their western entry/exit points in southern Indiana, and cross the state of Kentucky. AR-455 has its entry/exit point in Harrison County, IN. AR-315 has its western entry exit point near Evansville, Indiana. Indianapolis Center (KZID) controls these AR tracks. There are several air refueling units that operate in these two tracks, one is the 121st ARW based at Rickenbacker ANGB. |

MILITARY MONITORING
TIPS
Here are a few tips for monitoring
military frequencies in Southwestern
and West Central Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.
The
best activity comes from the near
daily activity of Ohio Air National
Guard units training in the Buckeye and Brush Creek
Military Operations Area (MOA) over southern Ohio,
about 60 miles east northeast of Cincinnati. The City of Hillsboro lies
practically under the middle of the MOAs
which are also known as Restricted Area R-5503 A/B.
Military operations in R-5503 airspace are controlled by the 123rd Air Control Squadron, a unit of the Ohio Air National Guard based at Blue Ash Airport in the northern area of Cincinnati. Sometimes the 123rd ACS uses the callsign "Coffee Table", however they are mainly heard as "BLUE ASH" over the radio. The busiest user of R-5503 is the 178th Fighter Wing of the OHANG based at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport near Springfield, Ohio. R-5503 is also used by the 180th FW (STING) from Toledo and the 122nd FW (SNAKE) of the Indiana ANG based at Ft. Wayne International Airport. Most days when the 178th is active they fly twice a day in R-5503, usually starting between 9-11 AM local time and again around 2 - 4 PM local time. They occasionally will fly night missions as well. Wright-Patterson
AFB has always been one of the United States Air
Force's
major installations, although not as busy as it used to be. In 1995 the
4950th Test Wing moved to Edwards AFB, California, in 1996
the 906th Fighter Group disbanded and the 178th Fighter Wing moved
20 miles north to Springfield-Beckley. The only active flying unit now
stationed
at WPAFB is the 445th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). The
445th AW comprises two Air Squadrons, the 445th Aeromedical Evacuation
Squadron and the 89th Airlift Squadron. One can watch many different aircraft arrive and depart during the week. During hurricane season (June 1 - November 30) Wright-Patterson AFB is a "safe-haven" for military aircraft from the Gulf and East Coasts. If a hurricane threatens the coast of the US, aircraft based in strike areas are flown to WPAFB for safe keeping until the hurricane threat has passed. Wright-Patterson is also the headquarters of the Air Force Material Command and the US Air Force Museum. It is a major USAF research and development center. A good place to
view aircraft from is the Wright Brothers
Memorial
Park overlooking the base. Most aerial refueling heard in this area occurs in R-5503 involving OHANG units usually being refueled by KC-135 Stratotankers from the 121st ARW based at Rickenbacker IAP south of Columbus using the callsigns TAZZ and SLUFF, the 434th ARW from Grissom AFB using the callsign MASH, or the 171st ARW from Pittsburgh, PA using the callsign STEEL. Jefferson Proving Grounds near Madison, Indiana (Some 50 miles west of Cincinnati) still offers some decent listening. Jefferson Proving Grounds was a range for use by various Army National Guard units for weapons training and testing. It has since closed as an active base, but due to the fact that there are countless unexploded ordnance in the ground, it can never be fully release to the public. The airspace above JPG continues to be used on occassion for practice bombing and strafing runs by various local Air National Guard Units. Still a little
further west is Camp Atterbury near Taylorsville,
Indiana
in the central part of the state.

I am maintaining a Military Callsign database. As with any such list as this it will always be incomplete,
but I attempting to keep it up to date as possible. These are accumulated from my own monitoring efforts and logs posted to various mailing lists. MONIX MILITARY CALLSIGN LIST |
